Evans Philp Partner Becomes Chair of Large Advocacy Group for   Practicing Lawyers in Ontario

Hamilton – Randall Bocock, a prominent Hamilton lawyer with extensive roots in the local community, is the new Chair of one of the largest advocacy groups for practicing lawyers in Ontario, The County and District Law Presidents’ Association (CDLPA).

“I am pleased to be taking over as Chair of CDLPA. It is a tremendous honour to be representing an association that’s been a strong advocate for the practicing bar in Ontario for almost twenty years,” said Randall Bocock, incoming chair of CDLPA.

“I look forward to taking on the issues that affect the practising bar in Ontario. CDLPA is one of the largest associations representing lawyers and has always had a strong voice in representing the issues important to the practising bar,” said Bocock.” My goal as Chair is to advocate for the enhancement of services and support for sole practitioners and small firms throughout Ontario. This means specific focus on legal aid fee increases, exclusive registration of all real estate documents by lawyers, enhanced court services, funding for research services at the local level and speedy access to judicial services. Such enhancements run in lock step with the goal of public access to justice and the public’s right to a free of fraud and reliable land titles system.”

Randal Bocock is a partner and Practice Head of the Business and Property Law Department at Evans Philip in Hamilton. He is responsible for the provision of corporate, real estate and estates law services at the firm. Bocock is also firmly involved in the local community, having been the President of the Hamilton Law Association, the President of McMaster University Alumni Association and a present director of the McMaster University Foundation.

“It has been a rewarding experience being Chair of CDLPA,” said Paul Kowalyshyn, out-going Chair of CDLPA. “Working for the practicing bar and member associations is both challenging and tremendously satisfying. Randall will serve CDLPA well and I have every confidence that he will bring his tremendous experience, knowledge and diligence to this important position,” said Kowalyshyn.

The Executive of CDLPA is comprised of eleven individuals, most of whom are elected at a province wide Plenary Session and reflect the judicial regions of Ontario. Eight regions vote for their own representative on the Executive and the remaining two positions are reserved for the Chair of the Association and the immediate Past Chair. The remaining position has been informally filled by the Toronto Lawyers Association (TLA), which has just signed a new association agreement with CDLPA in order to fully reflect the ongoing formal working relationship.

The Chair is elected at Plenary every other year for an 18 month term and it has been the tradition of the Association that the vice chair of the Association succeeds to the position of Chair.
